Asexual reproduction by fission in Holothuria atra: Variability of some parameters in populations from the tropical Indo-Pacific ArchiMer
Conand, C.
Holothuria atra is the most common aspidochirotid holothurian on tropical Indo-Pacific reefs, Asexual reproduction by transverse fission, followed by regeneration, has been studied at Reunion Island (Indian Ocean) and compared with different populations of the Indo-Pacific zone, thus permitting a better identification of the most significant parameters and a better understanding of this reproductive strategy. At Reunion Island, the species is studied at two stations on the same fringing reef: 1) on the back-reef where the fission rate is high (20 % of the population), the individuals small (generally weighting less than 150 g) and the population density high (4/m(2)); and 2) on the reef front, where fission is extremely rare, the mean size of the...

Colonisation d'un récif frangeant de l'île de La Réunion par les larves de poissons coralliens ArchiMer
Durville, P; Bosc, P; Galzin, R; Conand, C.
The colonization of a fringing reef of Reunion Island by fish larvae takes place essentially from August to February with two peaks, in August-September, when the water temperatures are coldest, and in February when they are at a maximum. The number of fishes, as well as the number of sampled species, present similar values over two consecutive years with, nevertheless, a strong variation in the species involved. In Reunion Island, the number of post-larvae which colonise the reef is one hundred to four hundred times lower than on larger and more structured reefs. This phenomenon could be explained by the geographical characteristics of the island. The stock control of the adult fish in Reunion could largely be the result of the arrival of post-larvae on...
